Should You Upgrade Your PC Now or Wait Out the RAM Shortage?
I’m on a computer from 2017, which is exactly the kind of machine people ask this question about. Instead of guessing, I looked at what the memory makers are saying. Here’s what works.
Don’t count on a drop
Micron’s CEO said on September 30 that customers will pay much higher prices next year, with demand beating supply through 2028. I covered that in my RAM crisis post, so the question here is what to do about it.
Upgrade only for a real problem
If my 2017 computer still does what I need, there’s no reason to pay peak prices for extra headroom. Slow today is a reason. Nice to have isn’t.
Don’t assume storage is safe
TrendForce expects NAND flash contract prices to climb another 15 to 20 percent this quarter, mostly from AI data center demand, so an SSD may not get cheaper by waiting either.
Fix one thing at a time
- Add RAM only if you’re actually running out
- Add an SSD only if you’re still on a hard drive
- Skip anything that’s just a nice upgrade
Buy for today, not for panic
Pick the one part that fixes your actual bottleneck, and leave the full rebuild for later.
An older PC isn’t a countdown clock. It just means upgrading with a reason instead of a rush.
